More than 30 years ago, a molecule with powerful anti-cancer properties was discovered in sea sponges. However, the compound was so structurally complex that scientists were unable to synthesize it in large enough quantities to test it in humans. Now a team of scientists has made a breakthrough, achieving complete synthesis of the molecule in sufficient quantities to begin clinical trials.
