A month ago, scientists from NUST MISIS, together with doctors from a veterinary clinic, performed an unusual operation: they implanted a biomimetic hybrid prosthesis of the tubular bone of the front paw into a cat. A biocompatible implant imitates the architecture of real bone: the patient’s own cells are “grown” onto the implanted structure. Before this, the same prosthetics were done on the femur of a dog, and before that on countless laboratory rats and mice. The research that led to this result has been ongoing at NUST MISIS for about 10 years.
