Researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology in Japan and Western University in Canada studied voluntary complex finger movements using functional MRI. It turned out that the idea of the hierarchical structure of movement is reflected in its anatomical organization not entirely mirrored: only individual elementary movements have a clear localization in the primary motor cortex.
