A new study has revealed that a monkey's brain creates an image of a human face by gradually piecing it together. The principles by which it recognizes faces are based not on the action of groups of nerve cells aimed at specific faces (as previously thought), but on a collection of about 200 cells that focus on different sets of facial characteristics. The combined information provided by each nerve cell allows the brain to identify any face.
