Microscopic study of the cerebral cortex, begun by the domestic scientist Professor V.A. Betz in 1869, T. Meinert and others showed that its structure (architectonics) is not the same. The cells and fibers that form the cortex have certain structural features in different areas. In this regard, the cortex is divided into a number of sections (fields), characterized by the thickness and density of the cortical layers and the structural features of the constituent elements (Fig. 32). A number of authors have identified different numbers of fields in the cerebral cortex. Thus, K. Brodman identified 52 fields, K. Economo - 109, O. Vogt - 180, G. Koskinas - 119.
