Neural circuits responsible for innate responses to odors have been discovered

Animals have innate reactions to some odors that do not need to be learned. These odors can influence behaviors important for the survival and reproduction of the animal, such as feeding, mating, freezing in place when danger appears, or flight. Even if an animal has never encountered an odor from this important group in its life, it will react to it in a certain predictable way. One would expect that all members of a given animal species would have specific neural pathways responsible for such innate responses. American scientists published a paper in which they described these neural pathways, as well as experiments on manipulating such neurons. It turned out that by controlling the functioning of neurons responsible for innate reactions to certain odors, it is possible to influence the behavior of animals. It turned out that some neurons are responsible for the reaction to attractive odors, and the other part - to those that have a repulsive effect. By activating the neurons of the first group, you can convince the mouse that it smells a pleasant smell, which is why it will prefer to be in a place where it feels like there is such a smell. Activation of neurons in the second group, on the contrary, causes mice to avoid a certain place, as if there is a smell there that causes an innate reaction of aversion.
